Gecko-Charts Seasonals

bulletUpdating Gecko-Charts Seasonals for users of Gecko-Charts 2.5

Version 2.5

Q.  When installing Gecko-Charts 2.5, my account code is not accepted.

  1. Make sure that you are typing all of the letters in the correct case,
including the hyphens, and have no spaces before, inside, or after
the account code.  The format is GCXX-XXXX-XXXX.  Also, on the
Account Code screen you have three total windows to enter infor-
mation into.  All three are required fields, make sure that you have
supplied information in all three to continue.

Q.  How do I get access to all 85 commodities, if I have already purchased
      the Subscription service?

  1. Once you have purchased the Subscription Service, you will need
to install the extended data set from your Gecko CD.  For step-by-step
instructions click here.  Once the data is installed you will need to do a
data download and then choose the new commodities from the Commodity
    Chooser.

Q. When attempting a data download, I get an error stating that my account is
      invalid.

  1. Click on the Help Menu then About Gecko-Charts to view your key code.
Compare the number in this window with the code you received in your
email or on the packing slip when ordering the software.  If it is different,
give Gecko Software Tech Support a call at 435-787-2240 to help edit
this value. If the value is the same, contact the tech support dept and have
    them check your account status.

Q. When attempting a data download, after installation, I am told that I need a download account.

  1. Click on the Help Menu then About Gecko-Charts to view your Serial
Number/Account Number.  If there is no serial/account number, click here
to download the Key Code Update.  You will need to close the Gecko-Charts
program, run the update, start Gecko-Charts again, then try a demo download.  If you
have further problems, please contact our tech support dept at 435-787-2240. If
you are a demo user you will need to sign up for a download account.

Q. When running the Tutorial Videos located on the Gecko-Charts 2.5 CD I do
not have sound or a pictur
e.

  1. Try running the Windows Media Player instead of the Camplayer to view the tutorials.

    1. Click on Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Windows Media Player

    2. Choose File - Open and browse to the Gecko-Charts 2.5 CD/Tutorials/ and then
click on the video that you would like to play.

Please report any issues you are experiencing with the technical support dept.  Email:  help@geckosoftware.com.

Version 2.0

Q.  What is the correct Key numbers for Natural Gas?

A.    Units: Dollars (Change this one)
        Contract Size: 10,000.00
Point Value: 10,000.00 (Change this one)
        Minimum Move: .10

Dollars is just a label, but the chart is shown in dollars.
Point Value is the big one. Make sure it's 10,000 vs. 1,000.

Q.  What is the correct Key numbers for Rough Rice.

A.    Contract Size: 2000.00
Point Value: $20.00 is the markets correct value.
Due to an error in the code, the point value must be set to 2000.00 for
contracts before August of 2000 to calculate correctly.

Q. Data Corrections for Rough Rice (RR)

A.  Our historical data and current data for RR (Rough Rice) is correct by
value, but the decimal point is in the wrong place in the historical
data. CBOT's contract specs list RR as being quoted in cents and half
cents, with a half cent move (tick/min move) being worth $10.00 per
contract. This makes a whole cent move (point) worth $20.00.

Unfortunately our old data was being quoted in dollars, cents and half
cents, which required the point value to be $2000.00 in order to
correctly calculate your orders.

The historical data has been fixed on the next version of Gecko-Charts, (Version 2.5)
but only the current contracts, 2000U, 2000X, and the long-term monthly
historical charts have been updated for the Gecko-Charts 2000 users. We apologize
for the inconvenience this may cause, but it was not feasible to require
all users to download all of Rough Rice again.

Your data download today should update the 2000U, 2000Z and Long term
monthly charts so that there is not a 100 x jump in the point value.

If you are trading current contracts, the Long Term monthly chart will
correctly display historical trending. Change your point value to $20.00
and your Price Bar Every to 20.00.

If you are practicing on any historical data prior to Aug 2000,
excluding the 2000U and 2000Z contracts, your point value needs to be
$2000.00 and your price bar every should be 2 or possibly even 0.2.

These values are on the Key tab of Gecko-Charts 2000.

Note:  The database for Version 2.5 has been updated and you do not need to make these
adjustments with the new version.

Q. When opening my Gecko-Charts I get a message that says:  Your registration key is not recognized by the server.  What do I do?

A.  1. Double-check to see if the server is accessible from your machine.  Connect to the internet and browse to http://futures.geckosoftware.com.  If it doesn't find this page, you are having a problem connecting to the server.  Double-check your internet connection then wait a few minutes and try again or give us a call to verify the status of the data server.

2.  If your browser is able to browse to this page, enter your key code when prompted on startup.  If the code is not recognized, call the tech support department  (435) 752-8026 to check your account status.

Q. When I click on the begin button in the data download window, a window titled HTTP 407 pops up. What is wrong?

A. Error 407 means a Proxy server is running between your computer and us. Gecko-Charts uses a subset of the IE 5 controls and doesn't have proxy authentication settings. Ask the proxy administrator to enable "Anonymous" authentication on the proxy server computer.

Q When I click on the begin button in the data download window, a window titled ERROR 1 DB 2 pops up. What is wrong?

A. ERROR 1 DB 2 means our futures database is temporarily offline. If we didn't down it ourselves for maintenance, then the server notifies us of this condition. Often we have it corrected in 30 minutes or less.

Q. My Gecko-Charts 2000 Full Version thinks that it is a demo version?

A.    Your Gecko-Charts settings need to be reset.

Download the GC2000 reset utility.
(Save it to the desktop, and execute it one time, then run
the software.  Remember to have your registration key handy.)

Q.    How do I magnify the X & Y axis independently?

A.    Hold down the Ctrl. Key OR the Shift Key while left clicking the magnification tool over the chart.

Q.  Why cant I see the open/high/low/close values at the bottom right of Gecko-Charts?

A.    A few things can cause this to happen:

1. You don't have a recent update of Gecko-Charts. In Gecko-Charts, choose help > about Gecko-Charts. See if the version number is at least 2.0.20. If it isn't, Try doing two data downloads in a row. This should retrieve the latest updates, and a window will pop up, instructing you to restart the computer when the download is complete. If you are unable to retrieve data, check out the possible server issues and please email or call us for help.

2. The Ariel font is not installed on your system, and windows is substituting the wrong size font. You can look in the font control panel to see if you have this font. If you don't, Microsoft has instructions on adding fonts. Generally this font and the others that Gecko-Charts uses are standard windows fonts, and are installed by your Windows installation disks.

3. Your resolution settings are lower than the minimum requirements. Open your display control panel, choose the settings tab, and slide the display area control to at least 800 x 600.

4. You have large fonts, or other selected from the display control panel. This needs to be set at small fonts to display correctly. In the display control panel, choose the Settings tab. Then click on the advanced button. In this new window, select the General tab and in the Display area, choose Small Fonts in the pull down menu.

5. You have a theme or scheme selected that is forcing the program to use a larger font than it requests. If you have themes installed, open the theme control panel and try the windows default setting. If you don't have themes, or they were already on the windows default setting, open the display control panel, choose the appearance tab, and select the windows standard scheme.

Q.    If I have technical support questions or comments, should I post my requests on PitNews.com's "The Wall" futures forum?

A.    Please, no -- not if you want an answer from Gecko.  If you need tech-support, send an email to help@geckosoftware.com.  Or call: 435-752-8026.

"The Wall" is for open discussions regarding the futures market, tips you can give to and receive from other users and traders in the market.  It is not a forum to complain about or request services from Gecko.  The Gecko staff generally ignores comments made on The Wall, and regards them as non important because the person who posted the request did not contact Gecko Directly.  We are busy taking care of people who do take the time to contact us directly.

The editor of PitNews has asked us to ask our software patrons not to fill their forum with technical support questions and comments.  Again, contact Gecko, not PitNews if you need help with your software.

Q.    What is the little chart button in the upper right hand corner used for?

A.    It is a fit to screen button.  Some charts, usually due to a long up or down trend,  cause much of the chart to end up looking like nothing more than a flat line through the middle of the screen (usually long-term charts).  If you click the "fit to screen" button, GC2000 will attempt to resize the chart view to fit your screen resolution.

Q.    Do I need Track 'n Trade to run Gecko-Charts 2000?

A.    No, Track 'n Trade is simply a six hour multi-media video seminar on CD-ROM that teaches how to trade the futures market, and uses Gecko-Charts 2000 as the learning tool in the video's.  Although, if you own Gecko-Charts, you may want to purchase Track 'n Trade too, simply because it makes such a wonderful training tutorial for the software.

Q.    Do I need Gecko-Charts 2000 to learn from Track 'n Trade?

A.    No, Track 'n Trade is a six hour multi-media video seminar on a three CD-ROM  set.  It teaches people how to trade the futures market.  It just so happens that it uses Gecko-Charts 2000 as the learning tool in the video's.  Therefore you may want to purchase Gecko-Charts too, simply because it makes for such a wonderful training combination.

Q.    Once I open a Book, how do I add pages?

A.    Simply click on a new contract month/data.  The new chart view will open up automatically.  If you click the "Open" tab, you will be able to switch between all of the open chart views.  If you look in the options screen, you have a choice to have charts automatically open to the end of the chart, or open at the beginning of the chart.

Q.    How do I display two or more charts on the screen at one time?

A.    To display two or more charts, you must open two or more "Books".  A Book is a set of contract "Chart Views".  Currently you can only view one chart within each "Book" at a time.

To display multiple charts on the screen at once, you must open two or more "Books" and click one of the cascade buttons on the button bar.  (This is a Microsoft programming limitation we hope to re-write.)  Our goal is to have the ability to display multiple "Chart Views" that all reside within one "Chartbook".  But, this may not happen until sometime in the future, so for now, we have to view separate "Books" to get multiple views.

Q.    How do I get rid of or close a chart view out of my Book?

A.    To delete a chart from your Book, click on the open tab and right click on the chart you would like to remove.  A menu will appear with Delete as an option.  Highlight and select it and the chart will be removed.

Q.    When I open up the chart data, I don't see any ticks or charts on the screen?

A.    This is done intentionally, so you don't accidentally see the future of the contract. This way, when you are practice trading, you will have a more realistic trading experience.  If you want to see the entire chart, without playing the chart from the beginning, click the "end of chart" button on the play bar at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.  This will automatically display all the data available for that commodity contract.

If you would prefer to have all your charts open completed, right click on the chart windows, and go to the options page.  You can then select the feature heading TICKS, "Advance Chart on Open".  This will force all charts to display to the end of the available data when you open the chart.

Also note that when you download data your saved charts do not advance to the end of the chart.  All saved charts will open on the same day they were saved.  Be sure to advance to the end of the chart to view all of the data.

Q.    How do I edit text that I have added to the screen?

A.    Right click the 'Push-Pin" text icon, it will pull up the edit box.

Q.    How do I change options on the "Moving Average" lines?

A.    Right click on the Chart Window and select Options to view the Options Panel.  There is a section on Moving Averages.  Make your changes then Click on OK to exit and save.  You can also make changes in the Options Panel and apply them to the entire Program.  See Program Defaults.

Q.    How do I find the dollar calculator.

A.    Click the dollar calculator icon on the tool bar (dollar sign icon.)  Click the buy and drag to the sell point and release the mouse button.  This will give you an onscreen representation of the dollar amount between the two points.  To specify a more precise point value, simply right click the line of the on screen drawn calculator and a dialogue box will appear that allows fine tuning of the point values.

Q.    How do I change to different tick styles?

A.    To change the tick style, right click the Chart Window and select Options.  In the middle of the panel is a section on ticks.  Select the tick style from the drop down menu.  You can choose from OHLC, HLC, Close only and Candle Stick.

Q.    How do I delete/cancel an order that did not fill?

A.    Simply click the little hour glass handle on the order, which will highlight it, then press the delete key on your keyboard. If you are trying to cancel an order after you have started placing it, finish placing it, then delete it.

Q.    Why can't I hear what the PitMaster is saying on my Track 'n Trade disk?

A.    Track and Trade was published for Windows Media Player, since it is distributed with Windows. Often Real Player has been installed, and chosen as the 'default' video player. Unfortunately Real Player is unable to open files of the size required by The PitMaster to present his trading techniques. Open the files with Windows Media Player instead.

Q.    What do I do about Illegal Operation and Fatal Exception errors?

A.     If the error brought up a dialog box, please click on the details button, and write down the message. You don't need the registers information. Normally the first sentence or two of the details will do. Then look through our error details that we have identified. If they don't help you, please email us with the details of the error.

Q.    Error detail: Exception 10h in gkcharts.exe at ...

A.    Your printer driver is causing math co-processor errors, and may be out of date. Try downloading the latest version of the driver from the printer's manufacture, uninstall the current version, and install the latest version. This error happens with other products, and is documented at http://support.microsoft.com under articles: Q183522, Q141930, Q171563. Other workarounds people have tried include: choosing a different printer as your default printer, use a different printer, use a compatible printer driver (the Windows driver), opening and minimizing Windows Word Pad before running Gecko-Charts, disabling the math co-processor, ensuring their environment variable for temp points to a valid directory, and deleting the contents of the temp directory. If you need assistance with this, please email us. When you get the error, there should be a 'Details' button on the window reporting the error. Please click this button, copy the detail information, and email it to us.

Q.    Why wont Gecko-Charts version 2.0.23 open an old file I just saved?

A.    Since we added requested features to the options tool, we had to modify the way the file works. There was a bug in the way we did this. We posted version 2.0.24 within 12 hours of patch 23, and recommend that you update to that version or later. If you had opened a pre patch 23 file and saved it without renaming it using patch 23, special steps will need to be taken to recover that file. This may also apply to files created with patch 23, that use options tools. You may either email the file to us so that we may fix and return it to you, or call us at 435-752-8026 and we will walk you through the steps to fix it. We recommend that you email us your file unless you have experience using a hex editor.

Q.    Which line is which with Stochastics?

A.    Sometimes it is difficult to tell which line is the %K and which line is the %D in a stochastic indicator.  %D is what the stochastics line looks like after applying a smoothing constant. In general, the %D line will always look smoother than the %K line. If your color options are set to factory default, the lines are as follows: Fast Stochastics %K is red, %D is green; Slow Stochastics %K is green, %d is blue. Please note that the %D line of fast stochastics is the same as the %K line of slow stochastics.

Q.    Internet Error Cannot Connect 12029?

A.    This error happens when you have your computer set to "automatically search for proxy server". This is an option in Internet Explorer that affects how programs use your internet connection. To disable this setting, open the control panel and double click on the internet options icon.  Click on the connections tab. Then click the "lan settings" button. This will bring up a new window. Make sure that the checkbox next to "Automatically detect settings" is NOT CHECKED. This should solve your problem.

Q.  What is the difference between the day only and other contacts in Gecko-Charts?

A.  Many markets have two different sessions, the day and electronic
(or night session). Most data providers - because the exchange disseminates
data this way - consider the start of the electronic (or night session) as
being the opening price, with the electronic data merged into the day
session data, so the open of a daily bar is the electronic open, the high is
the highest price achieved during the night and subsequent day session, the
low is the low of both sessions, and the close (or settlement - as this is a
range also, in which all market on close (MOC) orders must be filled) is the
close from the day session. For example, Today's bar will be the electronic
open from Monday, the highest and lowest prices from Monday nights
electronic session and Tuesdays open outcry session, and Tuesdays close.

What version 2.5 did was give Gecko users the ability to separate the two
sessions, day and electronic. Now you have the ability to chart the day (or
open outcry session) separately from the night session. Many people prefer
this, especially for 'paper trading' as it will give you a more accurate
feel for where you would have had your orders executed. Some people prefer
to use both sessions, other don't... neither is right, just preference.

It is worth noting that the electronic session has a lot of order
restrictions, and many brokerage firms charge a fee for placing night
sessions (even if they are not filled). Most electronic sessions do not
take stop orders, and operate only on limit orders. (Scott Barrie, CFEA)
